After having mixed expectations about this film, I went to the cinema thinking it would probably be a disaster but hoping it would be decent. I am a huge fan of the original and it is one of my favorite horrors, therefore I was interested in seeing what it would be like. Whilst it wasn't utterly dreadful, I must say that I was not impressed. Across the web it receives fairly low ratings:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>IMDB - 5.1/10</li>
<li>Rotten Tomatoes - 32%</li>
<li>Metacritic - 47%</li>
</ul>
<div>
In my opinion, I would say that the IMDB has an accurate score for this film, and perhaps Metacritic are close to my opinion however to be completely honest I believe Rotten Tomatoes are criticizing too heavily.</div>
<div>
The film is directed by Gil Kenan and follows a similar plot to the original, lasting 93 minutes. A young family is visited by ghosts in their home. At first the ghosts appear friendly, moving objects around the house to the amusement of everyone, then they turn nasty and start to terrorize the family before they "kidnap" the youngest daughter.</div>
<div>
As expected, the plot is very similar to the original and unfortunately had few strong features. One thing that I must admit that was fairly impressive were the camera angles. Some scenes were shot at angles which allowed the audience to question whether there was something waiting behind a character or not which I found quite thrilling. Another positive aspect was the suspense level. Although I didn't find it very scary, I thought the suspense was there. There were plenty of scenes with dead silence which made it incredibly eerie at times.</div>
<div>
Although I've mentioned few positive aspects about this film, I must say that the negative aspects unfortunately outweigh the strengths. This film plot is almost identical to the original which is disappointing as you would expect at least a few small changes. Another thing that I was disappointed by was the clown which appeared way too many times in the trailer, yet it was only in the film for no more than 20 minutes. After watching the trailer, I was excited to seeing the creepy clown a lot however we rarely seen it after a few occurrences. I also thought that it was very unrealistic near the end. When the house was being completely trashed up I thought it was really bizarre how none of the neighbors were outside curious and terrified of the wreckage of the house. Was it just me or did you all think this? Another minor negative aspect I encountered was that I felt it was a bit slow. Even when it did speed up I felt as though the film was very short and overall I expected a bit better.</div>
<div>
Whilst I clearly knew that it would never beat the original, I was optimistic in that it may be an average modern horror but I was wrong. I was disappointed with this remake as I really enjoyed the original and so I would not recommend you to watch this ahead of other popular modern horrors such as Insidious and Sinister.</div>

After seeing Transformers in 2007, I adored Shia LaBeouf as an actor and decided to see what other films he was in.<br />
<a name='more'></a>Not expecting much after seeing Transformers which everyone seemed to have loved, I watched it anyway and I was surprised. Disturbia is not an amazing film at all, but it is not a bad film. Ratings across the web support my view that it's just a decent film as shown below:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>IMDB - 6.9/10</li>
<li>Rotten Tomatoes - 68%</li>
<li>MetaCritic - 62%</li>
</ul>
<div>
As you see the official ratings across the internet support my view. This mystery thriller lasts approximately 105 minutes which is a decent run time. After the death of his father in a car accident, Kale Brecht (Shia LaBeouf) becomes a troublemaker and aggressive teenager. When he punches his Spanish teacher at school, he is sentenced to three months of house-arrest during his vacations. Kale snoops his neighbors with a binoculars and video camera for killing time, and becomes a voyeur of his next door neighbor Ashley Carlson (Sarah Roemer). When Ashley sees Kale and his friend Ronnie (Aaron Yoo) at the window, he tells out of the blue that their neighbor Robert Turner (David Morse) seems to be a wanted serial killer from Austin, Texas. The trio sneaks around his house, and Kale begins to suspect that Mr. Turner might really be the murderer.</div>
What I liked about this film is that the acting is very good. Whilst Kale and Ronnie continuously attempt to find some concrete proof that Mr Turner is a serial killer, Robert Turner continues to act in a very professional manner by basically mocking Kale for his beliefs and attempts to build a solid relationship with Kale's mother. His acting was so good to the point where I believed there was a murderer, but it may be someone else in the neighborhood. The suspense and tension in the film is also built perfectly well especially from the moment Ronnie is trapped in Mr Turner's house, as Kale runs outwith the range his tracker on his foot can cope with in order to desperately save his friend.<br />
A limitation to this film is that some of the scares were very predictable. For me, predictable jump-scares are a weakness to a horror film. There was one point in particular where Kale and Ronnie were looking about the house with the binoculars and the music went all silent. I won't ruin any more but what happened next was very predictable. Aside the predictable jump-scares, I don't believe there is really anything to criticize this film about.<br />
Overall, Disturbia is an average thrilling film which revolves around the mystery of finding out who the serial killer in the neighborhood is. Whilst it has few limitations, it also has many strengths which easily outweigh the negative aspects of the film making it overall an average horror. The tension and suspense is developed very well accompanied with fantastic acting - very few negative aspects.<br />

It is a fantastic basic slasher consisting of continuous deaths throughout the film, performed by a mysterious ghoul-masked character however there is an element of surprise and curiosity to it.<a name='more'></a> When I watched it, I kept thinking every five minutes "he/she is definitely the killer". From what I've heard, this was the global reaction to this film, until you discover the truth at the end. It receives very good ratings across the web as shown below:<div>
<ul>
<li>IMDB - 7.2/10</li>
<li>Rotten Tomatoes - 78%</li>
<li>Meta Critic - 65%</li>
</ul>
<div>
For me, this film deserves a rating within the IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes scores, and the Meta Critic score just seems too low for me.</div>
</div>
<div>
This slasher is directed by the magnificent Wes Craven (well known for his work with A Nightmare On Elm Street, and The Hills Have Eyes), and lasts an estimate of 111 minutes. After an anonymous killer guts two high school lovers, a mysterious rise in fear and rumours rise in a peaceful Californian town. A killer starts killing high school teenagers, with a young teenage girl, an eccentric and dramatic cop, and a selfish and ambitious reporter trying to investigate the murders. A strange number of events starts to happen around Woodsboro, including an accused killer, a suspicious boyfriend, discovered love and attraction, and, of course, the mysterious killer with a ghost face mask. Suspense, cleverness, and gore is what this classic slasher is full of.</div>
<div>
Indeed, there is a lot of suspense in this film as each person you may have thought was the killer suddenly becomes either dead or close to death. The suspense in Scream was very clever by Craven as it kept the audience attracted to the film, desiring to know who the real killer is. There is a high level of bloody violence/ gore involved when the killer rips his victims apart and the deaths range from a sneaky stab in the back to the insides being turned inside out. What was interesting about Scream too was that it was very scary too due to the costume design for the killer, and this created a sense of fear in the audience every time we seen the killer sneak up on someone. The use of the 'walkie-talkie' type phone was very effective in order to create a creepy masculine voice to drive each victim with fear and we could sympathise with each victim as Craven successfully allowed us to feel the fear in each person being stalked or watched. Aside these perfect features, the structure of the film was ideal. The film was carried out in a way that kept the audience guessing who the killer was and it was a real surprise in the end when we found out the truth.</div>
<div>
There are a small number of weaknesses in this film, one being the plot of the film. Everyone loves a good slasher, however it followed the exact same plot as every other slasher would. Death after death, although the negative impact of this weakness was limited for some as the use of the 'walkie-talkie' phone used to phone each victim was clever. There also seemed to be more focus on the relationship between Deputy Dewey (David Arquette) and the reporter which seemed to distract me a little. In a horror, the audience wants gore, a high fear factor, and plenty of suspense. Scream covered these features at a very high standard, although sometimes I was distracted by the growing relationship of the Deputy and reporter.</div>
<div>
Although there are few limitations to this top-notch slasher, the strengths of the film clearly and undoubtedly outweigh the negatives. If you are looking for a proper good slasher full of blood and guts, suspense, and pure fear then this is a film you should definitely watch. Not only that, but it also comes with a fantastic surprise ending that you would never expect!</div>

It is a really creepy film in my opinion filled with a massive ton of absolutely non-predictable jump-scares. When you think about it, how cool but also terrifying would it be to have an eye that allowed you to see supernatural things? <br />
<a name='more'></a>Anyway, the film has varying ratings across the web as you will see below :<br />
<div>
<ul>
<li>IMDB - 5.4/10</li>
<li>Rotten Tomatoes - 22%</li>
<li>Meta Critic - 36%</li>
</ul>
<div>
For me, it is a half-decent film and is genuinely very creepy at numerous points. By the looks of it, it seems as though Rotten Tomatoes and Meta Critic have slaughtered it with their ratings, as I would give it a more appropriate score closer to the IMDB score.</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
It lasts approximately 98 minutes and is directed by David Moreau and Xavier Palud. The violinist Sydney Wells (<span class="itemprop" itemprop="name">Jessica Alba</span>) has been blind since she was five years old due to an accident. She submits to a surgery of cornea transplantation to recover her vision, and while recovering from the operation, she realizes that she's having strange visions. With the support of Dr. Paul Faulkner (<span class="itemprop" itemprop="name">Alessandro Nivola</span>), Sidney finds who the donor of her eyes and begins a journey to find out the truth behind her visions.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'm not usually a fan of Japanese/Chinese horrors at all with the exception of Shutter, although I was slightly interested in this film. It is a perfectly strong film in the supernatural thrillers sub-genre for me and contains a bunch of wicked jump-scares which completely caught me off guard. Seriously, I don't understand why there is such a negative glow across the web about this film. Alba in this film is very impressive as well - first class acting. One scene I remember well scared the hell out of me. It was completely unexpected for me and was very random. It occurred in the cafe shop scene near the beginning of the film. It was one of the scariest and most unpredictable moments in the film. Another really scary and creepy scene was the elevator scene. I'm pretty sure everyone that has seen this will know what I'm talking about. Without ruining anything, I must say the elevator scene terrified me.<br />
<br />
The Eye is well known for it's numerous unpredictable jump scares, although the film does suffer in some aspects due to its disadvantages. Some scenes to me felt really pointless and made the plot feel weak. Another major limitation in the film is the camera action. Some of the camera angles and shots are very bad, and at some points it is recorded by the looks of someone recording with a camera. Although I previously said that the scares are unpredictable, I must admit that although they were unpredictable to occur at the time, it was very repetitive in that you knew after a few scenes that there was going to be a scare approaching.<br />
<br />
Overall, The Eye has an equal amount of advantages and disadvantages in my opinion. Whilst it consists of many jump scares, eerie, and creepy moments, it simply has similar disadvantages. I would recommend this film for anyone who purely loves a 'jumpy' film full of scares. However if you're looking for a slasher or a concrete plot, then this is not for you.<br />

Jason Eganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01669515715496955741noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6217301531661759931.post-49345399264001467252015-02-05T09:22:00.000-08:002015-02-11T13:26:58.323-08:00Five reasons why I believe the Poltergeist remake will fail.Across the web, I have noticed there has been a growing hype about the new Poltergeist remake coming in Summer 2015. A lot of people are saying it'll be as creepy as the classic in the 80's and it could be better than the original, whilst others are saying it may ruin the classic 80's film. For me, I think the remake will be unsuccessful and I believe that it will be nowhere near as good as the original. Here are some of my reasons:<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>First of all it is rated as a PG. Now all of you will say "well the last one was a PG so I don't know what you're complaining about?". Yes the original was a PG which I found quite scary, but the protagonist was JoBeth Williams. In the remake, apparently a 10 year old boy is going to be the protagonist. My problem with this is that it will not be as scary as the original.</li>
<li>Another negative feature is that it's being released in 3D. Seriously a horror in 3D? Sam Rockwell quoted that he feels it'll be "more of a kids film" and will be more of an "adventure", not meeting the fear factors of The Conjuring or similar films. Let's face it, a PG rated film in 3D with a 10 year old protagonist basically will be a kids film with a few scares. You'd expect a Poltergeist remake to meet the fear levels of the Conjuring and similar other modern horrors.</li>
<li>With remakes, you can't completely change the main plot or characters if you want it to go well, although you do need something different about the plot whilst still keeping it relevant to the original. I cannot see a remake of the Poltergeist being different. I mean what can you change about a house being haunted by a host of ghosts? Yes they've changed the protagonist but I would find it hard to change elsewhere. I feel as if the remake will be almost a replica of the original.</li>
<li>The SFX in the original were very good in my opinion, and seeing the DVD on the big screen was pretty impressive and frightening, alongside quality speakers. Nowadays let's face it - even in some of my favourite modern horrors such as The Conjuring and Insidious, the CGI is overused to the point where it is just ridiculous. I feel that a modern Poltergeist would ruin the original due to overpowered and unnecessary CGI effects used nowadays.</li>
<li>The fact that Gil Kenan (director of Monster House) is also directing this film makes me feel unhappy. Monster House as we all know was actually a decent film however it was a kid's film. Knowing that Gil Kenan is directing makes me think it'll be a tame horror with a few major scares. Looking at Gil Kenan's film credit, he hasn't been involved in any major horrors in his existence so far.</li>
</ul>
<div>
Overall, whilst many are saying they are looking forward to it, I feel as though it is hyped far too much across the web and it will be nowhere near the quality of the original. I think it could damage the reputation of the original for those who haven't seen it especially after they watch the remake if it turns out to be as bad as I am expecting it to be. It won't stop me going to see it though - I'll need to in case it's surprisingly decent although my reasons above are what I think is expected of how it will be bad. I'm not a fan of remakes apart from the Evil Dead remake and a few more, and I'm sure this will be a let down.</div>
Jason Eganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01669515715496955741noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6217301531661759931.post-81774343493573448492015-01-31T05:02:00.000-08:002015-01-31T05:02:31.133-08:00Hostel Part 3 (2011) - Very gruesome film!After watching part 2, all of my hopes and expectations in this trilogy were gone. The second part was promising until the comedy began which for me, doesn't fit with horror nowadays. However, the third part of Hostel was surprisingly decent. It follows a similar plot although, it is based in Vegas and revolves around a group of guys again rather than girls.<br />
<a name='more'></a> It receives some decent ratings across the web as you will see below:<br />
<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>IMDB - 4.6/10</li>
<li>Rotten Tomatoes - 60%</li>
</ul>
<div>
Unfortunately, it seemed as though metacritic haven't given this a rating, however the ratings above pretty much tell us the range of ratings across the web.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It is directed by Scott Spiegel and lasts approximately 88 minutes. A couple of days before his wedding with Amy (Kelly Thiebaud), Scott (Brian Hallisay) attends a bachelor party in Las Vegas with his friends Justin (John Hensley), Mike (Skyler Stone) and Carter (Kip Pardue). They go to a Strip Club, where they meet the escorts Nikki (Zulay Henao) and Angela that invite the four friends to go to a private party in the outskirts of Las Vegas. On the next morning, Scott, Justin and Carter realize that Mike, who is married with two children, is missing. Sooner they find that Nikki is also missing and they join to Angela to seek out the couple. They are abducted by a group of men and they discover that they will be submitted to sadistic tortures to satisfy the members of the Elite Hunting Club. Further, they find a surprising member of the club among the sick gamblers.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The general idea of the Elite Hunting Club was different in comparison to the repetitive second part, and it seemed to work for me. The sick feeling in this film was addressed from the moment we see all the members betting and auctioning on how the torturer would execute the victim and with what weapons they would use. The film includes a lot of gruesome scenes, which are very gory and disturbing. One in particular is the face mask scene - I'll say no more, but even thinking about it makes me want to vomit! There is an eerie atmosphere established at the start of the film as soon as one of the guys is strapped down to a seat and is forced to drink. By this moment, we feel as though the gorefest is going to commence until we discover it is a prank. For me, I think it contains the most disturbing torture scenes, therefore making it the best out of the three.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
There are few weaknesses to this film in my opinion, although the 88 minute timescale lets it down. It takes a wee while for the gore to begin and so I feel as though there's not a lot of violence in it. If it was extended even just 20 minutes, it would probably have been more promising. Aside timing, the only other disadvantage I can think of is probably the acting. At times the acting is unrealistic, although there are times where it is pretty impressive and is more believable.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Overall, I would definitely say this was my favourite part out of the three. Although, I believe that it may not be a film for everyone, and that only certain people would like this. What I have to say to you though, is that you should watch this film with an open mind and don't let anyone tell you not to watch it, and don't let anyone tell you how bad or good it is. Just go for it!</div>

Thinking positively, ignoring any possible negative sights, I watched it right through to the end. There were some fantastic, gore filled scenes which made me shiver and cringe. However at the same time, the positives unfortunately didn't outweigh the negatives. <a name='more'></a>Although I mentioned the positive gory scenes, there were too many poor moments in my opinion that either didn't fit in at all with the theme and overall mood, or they were simply boring and irrelevant. This occurred too many times as I watched, which let down the film so much. Across the web, it receives the following ratings:<div>
<ul>
<li>IMDB - 5.4/10</li>
<li>Rotten Tomatoes - 44%</li>
<li>Meta Critic - 46%</li>
</ul>
<div>
I would definitely say this wasn't as great as it's predecessor. Unfortunately Eli Roth didn't pull the strings in this sequel, following the exact same plot/idea and following the exact formulaic approach - kill everyone.</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Directed by Eli Roth, it lasts a fair 94 minutes which I would say is reasonable. Although, the gory scenes only last for a very short time out of the 94 minutes. Three female college students take a detour from their partying, enticed by a beautiful European woman who promises seclusion, safety and maybe even romance. What they get is a living hell where they are sold to the highest bidder who's fondest wish is to kill them slowly. Hostel 2 also follows 2 American men who, on the flip side of the coin, are willing to pay to join an exclusive club where a life will end at their hands...any way they like. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The film consists of few positive aspects. The fear factor sits at an appropriate level as the film does contain very disturbing and very bloody scenes even at points exploring the guts of humans. SPOILER ALERT ( This film contains a scene known to be one of the most disturbing torture scenes of all time which is when the executioner at the end has his genitals cut off. Furthermore, his genitals are fed to a wild dog, while he watches, bleeding to death.) As discussed, it consists of brutal torture scenes - the blood bath especially - and many more which could give you the goose bumps. Another thing worth complimenting is the acting. The characters are average, whilst the acting is fairly good. We understand their character and personality at an early stage in the film, and therefore clearly understand their panicking emotions as they are near death. The cinematography of the factory the the club execution in is very eerie and dark which is successfully in creating an atmosphere and element of being trapped. Furthermore, there is a claustrophobic feel to the factory when the main characters attempt to escape, and they are shut down by the gates.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Whilst the positives sound appealing, they are unfortunately outweighed by the negatives. As mentioned above, this film is pretty much identical to the first part! The special FX/ cinematography team done well in expressing the factory as a trap leading to certain death, although Eli Roth made a poor approach. What happens in the first part? 3 Backpackers travel to a Slovak city in order to meet their hedonistic expectations. In the second, college students travel to take a detour and are tricked by believing they may encounter romance. Both parts consist of characters tricked through sexual desires. The film is very formulaic in both parts - in the first part the goal is to get the main characters to the hostel, and to be tortured to death - which is exactly what the aim is in the second part. Another negative aspect is that there are too many scenes that are very long and boring and seem to be executed poorly. There is also too much time wasted on the romance aspect of Slovakia, other than the horror aspect. Worst of all is the conclusion - without spoiling the end, all I will say is that a very gory and wild film is ruined by a pathetic comedy ending which definitely didn't fit for me.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Overall, there are positives to this average gore-fest, although the negatives definitely outweigh the positives. I would have thought that Eli Roth would have made some attempt to change the story/script rather than simply change the gender of the characters. It is merely as if she genuinely made the exact same film but changed the gender, so that there would be a version with a group of boys, and a version with a group of girls. Very poor Roth, but seriously, the ending is even worse.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As always though, comments are definitely welcome! I had some debates on Twitter about this film as some people disagreed with parts of my overall opinion, so please let me know what you think in the description!</div>

The Guardian has believed this film to be "inferior" although at the same time, an "effective sequel". With ratings varying everywhere, and reviews glowing negative and positive everywhere across the web, I'd recommend this film everyday for a horror fan, however I can't say it was any better than it's predecessor.<br />
<a name='more'></a>In 2012, The Woman In Black was released and seemed to have a very promising plot and consisted successful horror features. This year, The Woman In Black : Angel Of Death was released, containing a similar idea, and pretty much identical horror features. Therefore, I must say that these films were very equivalent in quality. The ratings across the web are as follows:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>IMDB - 5.6/10</li>
<li>Meta Critic - 43%</li>
<li>Rotten Tomatoes - 24%</li>
</ul>
<div>
The ratings presented by the International Movie Data Base and Meta Critic are fairly accurate in my opinion. Even though I didn't see anything special in this film, Rotten Tomatoes have heavily criticised this one.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This film was directed by Tom Harper, and it could be argued that this film didn't live up to it's expectations due to it being only one of the main horrors directed by Harper. It contains a decent run time of 98 minutes which I was happy with. It begins 40 years after Arthur Kipps' experience at Eel Marsh house. A group of children under the care of two women, escaping from war-torn London, arrive to the house and become the next target for the ghost of Jennette Humfrye, otherwise known as The Woman in Black. With the help of a fellow soldier, the women and children must fend off the spirit of Jennette Humfrye, and end her presence once and for all. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I thought the acting in general was appropriate with only very few minor errors. We could clearly understand the emotions of many of the characters at intense moments. However, without spoiling anything, I must say that some of the acting didn't seem real enough. I thought the woman in black was involved in the story this time fairly well, as she was introduced pretty smoothly. The atmosphere at points was very dark and eerie, especially since the film revolves around the war period, and the house guests had to go down to the darkest basements and bunkers for protection. Well, maybe they weren't that safe after all! The idea of the woman in black teaching the children to commit suicide still exists in this film, and I must say that some of the scenes are disturbing merely due to the fact they are very young children. The jump scares on one hand are very scary, and they certainly caused me to be startled, although they weren't perfect.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
There is no improvement in the film in comparison to the first one in my opinion which was a let down to me because I had high hopes for this one. I also believe that it was fairly slow at the start which was problematic for me although some of you may prefer it if you like a bit of war background. Although I complimented the scares, on the other hand a lot of them are predictable at times which was unfortunate. The acting was a little rusty on occasions too and some of it just felt unrealistic overall.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Overall, this film is generally successful in that it contained appropriate horror features and a straightforward plot. I was hoping for this film to be better than the first film which I thought was decent. Therefore I would only recommend you guys to go and see this film if you enjoyed the first one. It's pretty much the exact same plot in trying to get rid of the woman in black's presence. On the whole, it's a very good 'haunted house' horror.</div>

I would like to wish you all a very happy new year, and would love to thank every single one of you for all the blog support last year, and for viewing my content in general. It was a fantastic year for me, having nothing at first and on the contrary having a lot of views now. <br />
<a name='more'></a>I will admit I was inconsistent at times with posts, leaving them a day late and sometimes changing my schedule with short notice. Lets hope 2015 will be a year full of success in the horror genre!<br />

As you should see on the left, these were the horror DVD's/box sets I received for my Christmas gifts and bought with my money. In terms of box sets, I was given The Omen Pentology, Alien Anthology, Predator Duology, Exorcist Anthology, Nightmare On Elm Street Collection, and the Hostel Trilogy. Also, in terms of single DVD's I got The Hills Have Eyes(1977), Aliens vs Predator Requiem, and Evil Dead (remake). It's a really epic bunch to look at in my opinion, and I cannot wait to watch them all and get reviewing! However, I need some help from you guys. I would like you guys to leave a comment telling me what to watch first! I have so much to choose from and so I am unsure what to watch and review first.<br />
Again, a huge thanks to everyone who has been involved in my blog, especially to my devoted followers, and I would love to wish everyone a happy new year. Come on 2015, roll on the horror!Jason Eganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01669515715496955741noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6217301531661759931.post-74775232252694868962014-12-24T05:08:00.000-08:002015-01-12T15:52:45.167-08:00Grave Encounters (2011) - Crazy Found Footage HorrorI watched this film expecting it to be terrible, as most found footage horrors are. I was so wrong. This film is fantastic, and is a close second in my favourite two found footage horrors, just sitting behind the Blair Witch Project. I thought the setting of it in an abandoned asylum was an exceptional idea, and obviously the film succeeded as a result. I usually don't get frightened when I watch modern horrors, however this scared the crap out of me.<br />
<a name='more'></a>I don't know if it was just to do with the fact it was in an asylum, since I'm terrified of asylums. The film receives reasonable ratings overall across the web as you see:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>IMDB - 6.1/10</li>
<li>Rotten Tomatoes - 56%</li>
<li>Meta Critic - 33%</li>
</ul>
<div>
I would definitely agree with IMDB, and would say that Rotten Tomatoes and Meta Critic are being too harsh. However, Meta Critic ratings have always been really critical.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
It is directed by Colin Minihan, and Stuart Ortiz (known as the 'Vicous Brothers'), and lasts an estimate of 92 minutes. Lance Preston (Sean Rogerson) and the crew of "Grave Encounters", a ghost-hunting reality television show, are shooting an episode inside the abandoned Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital, where unexplained phenomena have been reported for years. All in the name of good television, they voluntarily lock themselves inside the building for the night and begin a paranormal investigation, capturing everything on camera. They quickly realize that the building is more than just haunted - it is alive - and it has no intention of ever letting them leave. They find themselves lost in a labyrinth maze of endless hallways and corridors, terrorized by the ghosts of the former patients. They soon begin to question their own sanity, slipping deeper and deeper into the depths of madness, ultimately discovering the truth behind the hospital's dark past...and taping what turns out to be their final episode.<br />
<br />
I have always believed that asylums are a perfect setting for horrors, and so I really enjoyed this film. There is a thrilling atmosphere from the beginning as Lance interviews some people to discover the history of former patients, and ghost-sighting in general. Once they lock themselves in, we realise how spooky the asylum actually as due to insufficient light. The corridors seem to be never-ending in the film, which contributes to the eerie feeling, The first time we see the ghost of a patient is when we see someone running across the hallway. Soon enough, the crew follow the ghost in to see her in the corner. This was a very intense, and scary moment for myself and so I will not ruin for those who haven't 'encountered' this moment yet. I thought the idea of the entrance to the building disappearing was very successful as it built a lot of stress and panic in the characters. This was another thing I can compliment. The acting was certainly high quality, as at points I felt sympathetic for the characters who were desperate to escape. I liked the idea how the asylum changed some of the crew members, in that it made them become the way the patients were - absolute maniacs. I must also say that the ending of the film is fantastic - I won't say anything more, but you must watch it!<br />
<br />
The only thing that really frustrated me about this film was the beginning when they were paying people for interviews to make stories up just for their show. Fair enough if they actually do that in real life, however why would you show the audience that? It's just stupid and really unnecessary in my opinion.<br />
<br />
In conclusion, the film was very successful. There was a sustained eerie, and generally frightening atmosphere and feeling during the entire film, to the point where you actually sympathised with the characters.There were many thrilling and very scary scenes, and it was actually very interesting especially with the setting being at an asylum. It really was a very good found-footage horror.<br />

The film is very gory at numerous points, however the torture scenes and brief and to the point. They don't go over the top, or seem unrealistic. It contains an uncomfortable element of not knowing what comes next, which definitely made me feel uneasy whilst I watched this film.<br />
<a name='more'></a>The only thing I wasn't happy about with it was that it wasn't scary at all. There are plenty of scenes which startle you with gore, but not enough of fear. The film receives average ratings on the internet as you see:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>IMDB - 5.8/10</li>
<li>Rotten Tomatoes - 61%</li>
<li>Meta Critic - 55%</li>
</ul>
<div>
I would probably kind of agree with these ratings, although it could be argued that Meta Critic are a little harsh. I would agree with a ratings nearer to Rotten Tomatoes.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It is directed by Eli Roth, and lasts an approximate 94 minutes. While backpacking through Europe, college students Paxton (Jay Hernandez) and Josh (Derek Richardson) seek the ultimate vacation through sex, drugs and unforgettable experiences. When a friendly stranger informs the two of a hostel in Bratislava that offers the most beautiful and promiscuous women in all of Europe, Paxton and Derek trek with their new Icelandic friend Oli (Eythor Gudjonsson) to find the hostel that sounds too good to be true. When arriving to Bratislava, the trio found that the hostel was everything and more of what they expected. The events that follow are sure to deliver the unforgettable vacation that the two were looking for.<br />
<br />
I won't deny that this film isn't anything special, although it did have some quite good features. First of all, there was a good level of gore in the film which I was certainly disturbed by. It follows the basic idea of one person being killed, leading to the rest of the the group falling. The acting was actually quite decent in the film as well to be perfectly honest. I mean I could definitely see panic and fear through the central characters. I also thought the main character was fantastic. He successfully portrayed that everyone in the hostel was just waiting for death.<br />
<br />
Although this film does contain plenty of gore and disturbing scenes, the story is really bad. There is no attempt to create a solid, well structured story in this film. Seriously, what happens is that a few foreign girls flirt with the guys and lead them onto the torture area. All the film does is really show how people can be dangerous around the world. If the film didn't contain any bloody violence, I would rate it a lot less.<br />
<br />
Overall, the film is fairly successful in that it is packed with blood and guts, however it really lacks in some cases. The story, which is really the core to any film, was completely useless and was very bad. If the story was somehow better, I would genuinely rate it a lot higher. Hostel is lucky that there's gore because without it, I'd be heavily criticizing it.<br />

It is a proper horror icon, being possibly one of the best zombie horrors I've seen. For being made in 1981, it is very disturbing, frightening, and also extremely violent. I have also came to the conclusion now that I prefer this to the remake made in 2013. So if I've previously said I preferred the remake, don't take my word because this is so much better than the remake. Sam Raimi created an absolute masterpiece in 1981.<br />
<a name='more'></a>The ratings for this classic are as follows:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>IMDB - 7.6/10</li>
<li>Rotten Tomatoes - 96%</li>
<li>Meta Critic - 70%</li>
</ul>
<div>
Meta Critic is definitely being too harsh on this film, whilst I believe IMDB are being reasonable. Realistically, Rotten Tomatoes provide it with a rating which is very close to what I would give it.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The plot of this excellent film is so simple, however it works perfectly. As you should know, this film is directed by the wonderful Sam Raimi and lasts roughly 85 minutes. Five friends are spending the weekend in a remote cabin in the woods. While investigating the cellar, they discover a tape and a decaying old book full of strange incantations. The tape is played and it unleashes powerful evil force from the forest that is determined to destroy every last one of them. That's how simple the plot is, however it worked so well. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Where can I even start with the best features seriously. First of all, the camera angles are absolutely exceptional. Even from the beginning of the film, there is a very intense atmosphere created due to the increasing momentum as the friends drive closer to the cabin and simultaneously the camera seems to be nearing them. The acting is also fantastic especially from the man himself - Bruce Campbell. He played the role of the character Ash and he nailed it! Another feature I loved about the film was whenever a character was chased outside in the woods, the trees would fall down and snap as they became closer to the person which I thought was a brilliant technique used to enhance the fear. As you could probably expect, the movie is packed with intense violence and disturbing, gory scenes. I mean for a film to be made in 1981, this film is so damn disturbing! Some of the effects are really disgusting, and make you feel uneasy. Another point to mention is the make up. I definitely preferred the make up in this film in comparison to the remake and the demon locked in the cellar scared the living daylights out of me. The sustained growling and screaming from the demons was excellent and certainly frightened. I could speak about best features all day, however I'll end it on the note that the film was generally really scary and provided many unexpected jump-scares. It's a phenomenal film which definitely deserves a watch.<br />
<br />
There is only one weakness in the film that I can remember being unimpressed with. This was the scene in the woods where the tree branches basically raped Cheryl (Ellen Sandweiss). I felt as though it was simply unnecessary and was also a little stupid. I mean, surely Raimi could have came up with a more realistic way of her to become possessed?<br />
<br />
Overall, I was very impressed with this film. I can't believe I actually preferred the remake to this film as it is simply exceptional. With only one weakness for me, the film was packed with gore, fear, and many more amazing features which caused me to remain immersed in the film for the 85 minutes it lasts. If you haven't seen this then it's a must, because it is a pure horror icon.<br />

I mean, most films begin with a rather boring ten minutes summarising the story line, however the first ten minutes of this film are insane. Five minutes into the film, there are already high-intensity scenes, full of shock, horror and pure gore.<br />
<a name='more'></a>It really is a magnificent entrance to a film and sparks a huge interest into the audience to continue watching. The film receives good scores online too:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>IMDB - 7.4/10</li>
<li>Rotten Tomatoes - 75%</li>
<li>Metacritic - 58%</li>
</ul>
<div>
I completely disagree with the Meta critic rating which I feel is a bit harsh on this brilliant horror. Although, I'd agree that IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes have it just about right.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This masterpiece was directed by Zack Snyder, and lasts a very good run time of 101 minutes. It begins with Ana (Sarah Polley), a young beautiful nurse who finishes her day-shift at the hospital to return home to her beloved husband. The next day, after her husband is killed by her neighbour next door, he suddenly comes back to life. She discovers the chaos happening in her neighbourhood and escapes from her home. Soon after coming to her senses in the woods, she encounters a cop and other survivors, they decide to find safety in a mall. Soon more survivors come, and they learn that if they want to stay alive, they should stick together as the world is overrun by an army of undead. Can they survive the horror in this horrific global chaos? When there is no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The introduction undoubtedly is one of the best entrances to a horror film I've ever seen. It clearly and successfully introduces a dark, violent tone and signals that the rest of the film will be full of pure gore, which it is. The beginning is truly remarkable featuring insane car crashes and complete chaos in general. The film also introduces us more to the central characters once the film calms down as they hide in the mall. I felt that at the start of the film it was difficult to take in everything about the characters, and so this scene provides us a nice moment to understand who the characters are. The general make-up and effects of the infected is very realistic and I can remember a few scary moments in the film. Not only was I scared of jump scares or atmosphere, but I was also terrified of the zombies themselves. The acting is first class in the film, and the zombies scared the hell out of me!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It could be argued that the original Dawn of the Dead is better and perhaps this film doesn't live up to the remake. I personally like both films as equally, however if you're a huge fan of originals, then you might not like this film. Another possible key weakness to this film could be the genre. Although it is clearly known as a horror, there is a large amount of action which definitely outweighs the horror for me. As much as the zombies scared me, there was a lot more action scenes than horror which could put people off.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Overall, I was very satisfied with this remake and was very impressed. After seeing the majority of modern remakes, I wasn't expecting much however this was brilliant. The film begins with a fantastic ten minutes of violence and pure fear, and this is sustained very successfully throughout the entire film. As well as the introduction, I also really enjoyed the ending, which I will not discuss for spoiler purposes. </div>

Basically instead of posting 3 times a week - Monday, Wednesday and Saturday - I have reduced this number to just 2 nights. Now some of you might be thinking "Why on earth would you do that?". Well, it's not that I don't dedicate enough time to my blog, as I constantly advertise, and involve myself in the horror community everyday. The quality of the posts is the problem.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
I work all week, and since I have a lot to do at home, I cannot help sometimes but rush reviews a little when writing 3 a week. I feel that only compiling 2 a week would be more beneficial for me, and for all of you loyal followers, and viewers. To provide top quality reviews, I am therefore reducing the number of posts a week to 2 nights - Wednesday and Saturday - so that there are benefits for everyone.<br />
I hope I do not cause any inconvenience from this, and that everyone is satisfied with my decision.<br />

It is honestly one of my favourite horrors of all time. It doesn't matter if it's really old, or lacks in quality. It is a masterpiece. I thought to myself - surely this film cannot deliver such an exquisite horror, after being made in 1968.<br />
<a name='more'></a>However, I was definitely wrong. This horror is a true icon in the horror genre and I'm sure it will be for a long time in the future. Ratings online clearly convey how successful this film is:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>IMDB - 8/10</li>
<li>Rotten Tomatoes - 96%</li>
<li>Meta Critic - 65%</li>
</ul>
<div>
For me, IMDB even gives this film a low rating. Meta Critic in my opinion is really harsh on this film, and Rotten Tomatoes are spot on. I genuinely cannot think of anything that was majorly wrong in this film as it definitely contains all the horror - intense moments, extreme violence, blood and guts - it's the true horror package!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It was directed by George. A Romero and lasts roughly 96 minutes. I usually complain about the timing in films that are less than 100 minutes, but I simply cannot complain about this remarkable zombie horror. The plot is fairly straightforward - the dead come back to life and eat the living in this low budget, black and white film. Several people barricade themselves inside a rural house in an attempt to survive the night. Outside are hordes of relentless, shambling zombies who can only be killed by a blow to the head. Nowadays, it reminds me of the old Nazi zombie maps in Call of Duty: World at War where you would barricade the small building up with wooden planks. This film is exactly the same as this and the dead have the same characteristics in that they can easily take walls down.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
What I must talk about immediately is the level of violence in this film after being made in 1968. Not only are there numerous scenes where zombies are shot in the head, but the film actually shows you small moments of zombies literally munching on human bones of those who have recently died. It actually looks like they are eating a chicken drumstick or something. It was pretty smart how the film was made to make this look so casual to the zombies. Also it consists of many moments where you witness the zombies ripping apart bodies with their hands, and ripping out long stringy intestines to feed on. It really is very gory and a bit disturbing at the same time. The acting of the zombies in this film is also remarkable. I love how it shows you a view looking out of the window a few times, as it gives us a chance to watch the walking dead slowly approach the house, with numbers increasing every minute. I also miss the zombies from the 60's because they had that complete numskull sense in that they were clueless and merely trudged over to the nearest human. There are also a few scary moments within the film that I was personally startled with, and the film has a very dramatic end! I won't spoil the ending obviously but it is brilliant. The face point of the zombies themselves is also admirable. The film is so low budget, which clearly proves that you don't need ridiculous amounts of money to create the perfect horror. I really wish horrors were more like this nowadays, however most horrors today are full of repetition. I could speak about advantages all day, honestly.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Perhaps for the only time in my blog's history, I do not have any weaknesses to discuss within this review. The film was completely filled with strengths, and so I cannot possibly think of any weaknesses.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I am simply begging all horror fans to watch this film as soon as possible if you haven't seen it. I picked a copy of it up for only 75p pre-owned, and so I reckon you could get it very cheap. Even if you have seen it, it definitely deserves to be a film in your movies collection, and definitely in the top 10. It is full of horror, gore, blood and guts, sympathy, panic and intensity - all contributing towards the perfect horror movie for me. Honestly - good work Romero, you've made the perfect horror.</div>

You could call it a "horror film" although it really is a short horror due to its short run time. It consists of no sound whatsoever, and contains merely a bunch of random black and white animations. I think it is really funny and cool to see though, as a bat suddenly turns into a man, and it is pretty bizarre to watch. Some of the animations actually gave me goose bumps.<br />
<a name='more'></a>Funnily enough, the very first moment - when the bat transforms into a man - actually gave me a fright for some reason after the first time I had seen it. It obtains a very good score of 6.8/10 on IMDB which is brilliant for a black and white horror to have been made in 1896 - more than 100 years old!<br />
<br />
The "film" runs for approximately 3 minutes, and was created by <span class="itemprop" itemprop="name" style="font-size: inherit;">Georges Méliès. </span>A bat flies into an ancient castle and transforms itself into Mephistopheles himself. Producing a cauldron, Mephistopheles conjures up a young girl and various supernatural creatures, one of which brandishes a crucifix in an effort to force the devil-vampire to vanish. The short horror basically displays the character Mephistopheles creating many supernatural creatures, at several spontaneous moments. I actually enjoyed watching the clip, and would recommend to all true horror fans to watch it if you already haven't.<br />
<br />
I found it hard to identify the strengths within the film, however I would say for being over 100 years old, it is fairly entertaining and there is a spontaneous concept to the clip as we have no idea when the next character/supernatural creature is going to pop out. There are a few funny moments within the short horror, which I noticed near the end, as the man runs away and jumps off the balcony type ledge. I guessed from this that he couldn't take any more and gave in.<br />
<br />
Obviously, 3 minutes is not an ideal length however it is a short horror and was the first horror clip ever. I also feel that if there was sound to it, that it would be a little more interesting, even if it was background music. Apart from this, I wouldn't say there are many more weaknesses to it, although you could argue that the plot is rather weak. I thought it was pretty funny how random the clip was, although you might think differently.<br />
<br />
Overall, I would like all of you awesome horror fans to go and give the clip a watch! It can simply be found on YouTube if you enter "le manoir du diable" or "the house of the devil". Some of the clips contain audio, but if you want the full original experience, watch one without sound. I hope you do enjoy it folks, and try to watch it straight through. Don't allow any interruptions because it's pretty entertaining!<br />

I remember when I first watched it - I was absolutely terrified, being only a young boy, and I had a pillow in front of my face for the majority of the film. It's quite funny actually when I think about it. Although, I've seen it several times since then and I must admit, it's a really good thriller in my opinion.<br />
<a name='more'></a>First, the film starts off with intense jump scares, to be developed into a film with an eerie atmosphere full of silence. The dynamics within the film are simply magnificent, including the plot in my opinion. Here's what it earned on a few websites:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>IMDB - 6.5/10</li>
<li>Meta Critic - 73%</li>
<li>Rotten Tomatoes - 74%</li>
</ul>
<div>
Believe it or not, this film actually earns almost identical scores on Meta Critic and Rotten Tomatoes as Interstellar which I went to see at the weekend, and thought it was simply unbelievable. This proves that although it's obviously not as good as it, it actually is a really good film.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It is directed by Steven Spielberg (well known for Saving Private Ryan (1998) and Schindler's List (1993)), and lasts roughly around 116 minutes. Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) is a divorced dockworker and less-than-perfect father. When his ex-wife and her new husband drop off his teenage son Robbie (Justin Chatwin) and young daughter Rachel (Dakota Fanning) for a rare weekend visit, a strange and powerful lightning storm suddenly touches down. What follows is the extraordinary battle for the future of humankind through the eyes of one American family fighting to survive it in this contemporary retelling of H.G. Wells' seminal classic sci-fi thriller. The plot is much unexpected in my opinion - a lightning storm causing the literal uprising of alien machines from underground, attempting to wipe the whole of humanity. However, it is really good, and also shocking to see which is what I love about it. The general footage actually makes you feel emotional.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I feel the plot is very intriguing and different to what we have ever heard of in the past except from the fact it is a remake from 1953. I haven't seen the original myself; however I absolutely loved this film. From the start of the lightning storm there are sequences of lightning strikes which cause the machine to rise from underground. Not only do the jump scares of the lightning cause you to feel tense and nervous, but the general fear of every single human being in the city causes us to be sitting on the edge of our seats. Once the film reaches about the half way point, the family become deserted out in the countryside where the eerie atmosphere begins. It is a fantastic film to provide an example of how silent atmospheres are executed and there is one scene in particular I absolutely loved which is when they stay overnight in the basement of the house nice and peacefully, only until some weird alien creeps in.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Although the film is truly remarkable for me, I feel as though a lot of it is expected after the machines actually take full effect on the US citizens. Also, although there is a mysterious element to the rise of the machines, I think it is a little bit unrealistic for them to have been underground all the time they were, and to be woken by some simple flashes of lightning. However, apart from these minor weaknesses, I feel there is nothing else with the film. Although, you horror fans may not be happy to know that I wouldn't consider it as a horror. More than anything, it would be a sci-fi thriller; however it certainly contains scary moments!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Overall, I simply cannot deny that this film is a masterpiece. It has been one of my favourite films since my childhood and so I knew I couldn't write about films and leave this one out whether it's a horror or not. As above, I have already said there are a lot of good scary moments, and certainly jump scares for all of you who love them. Please give this film a watch guys, because it is highly recommended!</div>

However, I had to watch it as one of my favourite fantasy tales when I was young was Hansel & Gretel. I was rather intrigued that a fantasy tale had been created into a gory thriller, and felt as though I had to see it. Not only does this film address the story,<br />
<a name='more'></a>but it also explores the characters of Hansel and Gretel in more depth in terms of what their life had become after they killed the witch in the exciting and bizarrely tasty house, and had been deserted by their foster parents. The ratings this thriller earned are as follows:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>IMDB - 6.1/10</li>
<li>Rotten Tomatoes - 15%</li>
<li>Meta Critic - 21%</li>
</ul>
<div>
I would roughly agree with the rating from IMDB, however I think the scores from Rotten Tomatoes and Meta Critic are a bit harsh. Although I didn't find the film amazing, there wasn't much bad about it in my opinion.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The movie is directed by Tommy Wirkola and lasts around 88 minutes which is unfortunately a little short in my opinion as I feel it had the potential to be a little bit longer and more detailed. Anyway, the plot revolves around the famous Hansel (Jeremy Renner) & Gretel (Gemma Arterton) who are bounty hunters and track and kill witches all over the world. As the fabled Blood Moon approaches, the siblings encounter a new form of evil that might hold a secret to their past.</div>
<div>
The plot is fairly straight forward in that it merely carries on from the brother and sister being older and having learned from their encounter with the witch at the start of the film. Through the majority of the film, the two basically have the mission to save the children of the village who had been kidnapped by the witches, and to end the clan of witches.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The plot is very straightforward and simple to understand which could be an advantage to many people. Also, the film consists of a high gore level which was one of the things I really liked about it. Not only was there plenty of gore, but it actually showed you heads being blown off, and bodies being ripped apart. One scene in particular that I loved was the scene where the main witch attached the guy to the trees and completely ripped his body apart. Also, the deaths and incidents all seemed very realistic and weren't pathetic like the deaths in final destination. To be fair, I also loved the actors for Hansel and Gretel, and I felt they played the roles perfectly. In addition to this, I thought the film was very fast paced, and there were no moments at all where I felt slightly bored.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As above, the film is unfortunately a little bit short and could do with having a bit more length. I believe that the film could be developed a bit more in spacing out the main action scenes with a bit more of a detailed story. The film did attempt to be eerie at some moments as at the start of the film there was a large jump scare for me. However, I'd consider this film to be more of an action thriller and not very frightening. The plot also seemed a bit weak. It felt a bit too straightforward and I believe that there may have not been that much effort or thought put into the story which again, could have been stronger. Although I complimented the deaths being realistic above, there were some moments in the film where for instance Hansel would be smacked full force on the face with a stone hammer, and he'd just get back up as though nothing happened. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Overall, I feel that this film was a fairly successful action thriller rather than a horror. It contains an element of horror in the beginning in my opinion. However, from then it is all pure action, but there is a good amount of gore and guts flying everywhere! I would probably recommend this film for those who like thrillers, but maybe not really for hardcore horror fans. The intensity of horror isn't high enough, however it's packed with gore!</div>

Yes, I'm sorry to all you guys that hate horror musicals. Some people argue that musicals shouldn't even be associated with horror. I completely agree, however with the famous Johnny Depp in this film, I couldn't turn it down. After not expecting a lot from this film, I loved it. The acting was incredible, as was the gore content.<br />
<a name='more'></a>One of my favourite actors - Johnny Depp - was in the cast as well as one of my favourite actresses - Helena Carter - who is well known for the Harry Potter franchise. For me, this film should be well known for the remarkable acting. As you see, it earned fantastic reviews:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>IMDB - 7.5/10</li>
<li>Rotten Tomatoes - 86%</li>
<li>Metacritic - 83%</li>
</ul>
<div>
Just look at those reviews! Especially from Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic. Please give this film a watch folks if you haven't seen it. If you don't like musicals, just bear through it because the actual film aside the singing is remarkable.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The film plot in my opinion was very well thought out and reflects the true story of Sweeney Todd who killed his customers as a barber and used their body components for meat in pies. It lasts roughly 116 minutes and is directed by Tim Burton. In the Victorian London, the barber Benjamin Barker (Johnny Depp) is married to the gorgeous Lucy (Laura Michelle Kelly) and they have a lovely child, Johanna (Jayne Wisener). The beauty of Lucy attracts the attention of the corrupt Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman), who falsely accuses the barber of a crime that he did not commit and abuses Lucy later after gaining custody of her. After fifteen years in exile, Benjamin returns to London under the new identity of Sweeney Todd, seeking revenge against Turpin. He meets the widow Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter) who is the owner of a meat pie shop who tells him that Lucy swallowed arsenic many years ago, and Turpin assigned himself tutor of Johanna. He opens a barber shop above her store, initiating a crime rampage against those who made him suffer and lose his beloved family. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As I have already said, the acting in this film is exceptional, which you would probably expect from a musical. Johnny Depp was the perfect man for the role of Sweeney Todd, as he recklessly slashed victims coming into his saloon. Aside Depp, you have the sweet Mrs. Lovett who works in the pie shop. I loved the idea of them both uniting together to increase the efficiency of making their pies although it was quite a disturbing idea. The film is also generally tense in many areas, typically towards the end where the music is kept at a minimum. The gore levels are nicely set to provide a clear contrast to the singing, and of course, the film is concluded with an exceptional twist. I won't spoil it for you guys as many of you have probably not went near this film since it's a musical.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I wouldn't say there were many weak points in this film apart from all the singing. Most of the musical moments arrive with a depressing tone or atmosphere though, as Benjamin commonly sings with frustration proving his desire for vengeance. Although, there are a few awkward singing moments in the film that ruin it slightly as it tries to adopt a cheery tone, which certainly would not work with this movie.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Overall, I feel the musical aspects of this horror or slasher film can be ignored and outweighed by the gore, intense atmosphere, and amazing acting. Johnny Depp certainly perfects his role as Sweeney Todd as he is a very aggressive and dull man for the majority of the film. What is also interesting about it, is that there seems to be a strange relationship which develops between Benjamin and Mrs. Lovett, although Todd still seems very grim. Please give it a watch guys, even if you despise musicals.</div>

He looked to his left to see Cindy sleeping very peaceful which was good to see. However, he was still disturbed by her behaviour. Before attempting to wake Cindy without any violence or shouting, he went down for some breakfast. He tidied up the remainders of the wreck from the previous night, and within 5 minutes, he began to make some tea.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>All of a sudden, Malcolm heard a huge crash upstairs, which sounded like a large glass particle smashing. Without further shock or waiting, he began to walk upstairs quickly whilst shouting on Cindy. He crept into his bedroom to see Cindy sitting on the bed peering up at him. "What was that darling?" he asked. "What?" Cindy replied. "The crashing noise. I heard something smash." he said. "I'm sorry but I have no idea what you're talking about" Cindy mumbled and began to get up and walk downstairs. "Listen, Cindy! You can't ignore what happened last night! What's the matter with you anyway?" questioned Malcolm rather desperately. At this moment, Cindy was halfway through the door until she hesitated turning round to Malcolm. She stood there in silence before breaking out with a very silent "nothing" before proceeding on outside. Malcolm attempted to stop Cindy from proceeding any further away from the house; however she continued to protest and claimed she needed some fresh air.<br />
It was about half an hour later that Cindy returned with a few shopping bags and a smaller splatter of blood on her wrist. "Wow, what has happened..." said Malcolm. "Oh nothing" she replied, seeming normal once again chuckling. "I was just walking home quite fast until I stumbled upon my own foot. It was quite embarrassing but Baldo was there to help me." she said. "So you just had an accidental fall?" Malcolm questioned. "Yes, silly me I guess" she said chuckling. "Darling, can you remember anything from last night?" Malcolm asked gripping his wives's hand. "Yeah, the massive power cut?" she replied almost questioning him. "Not just that. You were acting very weirdly. You kept going on about Elena, and you attempted to hit me whilst you were asleep, and said Leave Me Alone in a strangely deep tone." Cindy sat down on the couch rather disturbed, with her face in shock. "Darling, are you sure you weren't seeing or hearing things?" she said in a kind of desperate tone. "I assure you, it was definitely real" he replied. The couple continued to discuss the tragedy before accepting it was a misunderstanding.<br />
However, it was not long before there was a loud chap on the door which was repeated four times. Malcolm walked to the door whilst shouting along "just a second!". He opened it to see Baldo standing and panting. "Oh, my friend. There's been an incident" he said. "What? What kind of incident?" Malcolm questioned. "A villager named Greta has been found lying in a ditch outside her house with several broken bones. Rumours are that she may be dead!" "Oh my god." Malcolm replied, and without any hesitation, he left the house with Cindy and Baldo to investigate.Jason Eganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01669515715496955741noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6217301531661759931.post-77446811929153680512014-11-09T14:02:00.000-08:002015-02-04T12:44:13.062-08:00The Sixth Sense (1999) - Exceptional Psychological Thriller<h4>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">What an absolutely fantastic piece of work directed by </span><span class="itemprop" itemprop="name" style="font-size: inherit; font-weight: normal;">M. Night Shyamala. Honestly after watching this film I was overwhelmed. Not only is the film itself exceptional, but the film is perfectly concluded with a twist. One that you perhaps may have not expected, however I anticipated it coming later into the film. I'll do my best not to address any sort of spoilers but the ending is remarkable.</span></h4>
<h4>
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="itemprop" itemprop="name" style="font-size: inherit;"><a name='more'></a> If you have seen the ending for this film, then I'll let you in on how I knew. At one point in the film Dr. Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis) shouts on a guy in his car with a window down. However this man does not react to the shout which led to me anticipating the truth in the end. Anyway, the film receives fantastic scores:</span></span></h4>
<div>
<ul>
<li>IMDB - 8.2/10</li>
<li>Rotten Tomatoes - 85%</li>
<li>Metacritic - 64%</li>
</ul>
<div>
It certainly deserves those scores in my opinion; however I feel Metacritic scores are slightly harsh as it's one of the best thrillers I have seen.</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If you haven't seen this masterpiece, then the plot revolves around Malcom Crowe (Bruce Willis) who is a child psychologist and receives an award on the same night that he is visited by a very unhappy ex-patient. After this encounter, Crowe takes on the task of curing a young boy with the same ills as the ex-patient. This boy - Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment) - "sees dead people". Crowe spends a lot of time with the boy much to the dismay of his wife. Cole's mom is at her wit's end with what to do about her son's increasing problems. Crowe is the boy's only hope.</div>
<h4>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">I could speak about the strengths of this film all day. Not only is the plot fantastic, but the beginning of it completely shocks us right away and causes us to even experience some complication. The general length of the film is perfect in my opinion as it delays the surprise ending enough, whilst showing how Crowe aids the poor young Cole. Another feature is the emotional aspect. Of course you can think of it as being quite thrilling, however I understood some moments to be sad. At several points in the film we witness Cole weeping and begging Crowe for help due to his fear. Also, in the car crash scene near the end, we witness Cole's mum completely bursting into tears as she learns about Cole's secret and what her grandmother has been trying to say to her. If you're looking for a few frights as well, then make sure you watch this thriller with no lights on. Not only does it deliver a perfect, eerie atmosphere for the majority of the film, but there are some jump-scares that appear completely out of nowhere. I honestly didn't expect any of them to happen as the film seems calm for the majority of it. I also thought the film was very creepy at several points as we watched Cole casually turn round to see people hung from the ceiling, or people with smashed in faces walking about. This is definitely got to be the best work of <span style="font-size: inherit;">M. Night Shyamalan.</span></span></h4>
<div>
<span style="font-size: inherit;">I am going to be completely honest here in telling you that I didn't notice any weaknesses at all in this film. My honest opinion is that I didn't feel it was weak at all. You could say that it was confusing at some points; however I feel that confusing moments are essential in this film in making us think about it.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: inherit;"><b><u><br /></u></b></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: inherit;">For me, this is possibly the best thriller you may ever watch. It was for me anyway. Before I reviewed this film, I knew I wanted to watch it again and so I did only a couple of hours ago from now since it's such a masterpiece. Fantastic plot, exceptional acting, and a magnificent ending for once in a horror/thriller. The final question is though - would you love a "sixth sense" to be able to see dead people?</span></div>

I thought I'd delay my Wednesday's blog post to use more time to write an epic Top 5 list of some terrifying horrors that you should consider on Halloween. So without further ado, I'll get to the awesome list!<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<b><u>#5 - Ouija (2014)</u></b><br />
Although I have yet to see this film, I must admit it looks pretty intense, exciting, and unlike any other modern horror. The plot of the film begins with a girl mysteriously killed after recording herself playing with an ancient Ouija Board, which leads to a close group of friends to investigate this board. They later find out that some things aren't meant to be played with, especially the 'other side'. So as you have read, the plot is quite basic but I think it sounds pretty awesome and reminds me of Jumanji (1995) which I thought was awesome!<br />
<br />
<b><u>#4 - Insidious 1/2 (2010/2013)</u></b><br />
I couldn't really recommend one out of the two for the insidious films. I believe that they are both relatively scary; however the second chapter is pretty complicated and involves close attention. Obviously, if you haven't seen the first film then I'd recommend you watch it since the story is carried on. Insidious 1 is the preferred one for me, which is a gripping story of a family in search of help for their son, Dalton, who fell into a coma after a mysterious incident in the attic. Little do they know that there is much more to this endless sleep than meets the eye as they explore the paranormal, and rediscover the past; the key to getting their son back once and for all. The second film lies in the same field "the other world", however I feel it is more detailed and complex in understanding.<br />
<br />
<b><u>#3 - The Amityville Horror (2005)</u></b><br />
A lot of you horror fans may argue that the original is much better than the remake. I've still to see the original, and so at this moment in time, I highly recommend you to consider this film on Halloween! I mean, it is full of scary moments, and is packed with jump scares. Aside the general scares, I feel the plot is adequate as well - George and Kathy Lutz and their three children move into a house that was the site of a horrific murder a year before. They decide to keep the house and try to keep the horror in the past. This is until, George starts to behave weirdly and their daughter, Chelsea starts to see people. What now follows is 28 days of sheer terror for the family. There is indeed 28 days of hell, as events heat up, and the father becomes crazy!<br />
<br />
<b><u>#2 - The Conjuring (2013)</u></b><br />
This was a film I was really looking forward to for a long time, and I went to see it on release, at a very busy screen! What I found frustrating at the time were all the girls who screamed every second which lead to extreme difficulty of hearing what the characters were saying. It was REALLY that scary. It is directed by the same director (James Wan) of Insidious, and consists of the same general concept of spirit involvement. The plot itself revolves around paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren who work to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in their farmhouse. It was a cracker in my opinion, and I believe that it was a very successful modern horror, gaining 7.5/10 on<br />
IMDB.<br />
<br />
<b><u>#1 - Sinister (2012)</u></b><br />
Yes, sinister indeed - perhaps one of the scariest films I have ever seen in my opinion. This was another epic horror that I intended to go and see on release (which I did), and boy was I scared at the end! I was so scared, that I had to ask my friend to come back into the screen in the end with me because I left my wallet in it. Anyway, I certainly felt this was not only really scary, but at the same time very violent. It is about a true-crime writer who finds a cache of 8mm home movies films that suggest the murder he is currently researching is the work of a serial killer whose career dates back to the 1960s. Not only this, but the serial killer also carried out murders at his own house which is very disturbing. I feel that the mask of the serial killer himself was terrifying and there is a very violent approach as the killer uses child's to kill innocent families.<br />
<br />
Hopefully, you may agree with me on some of these films, but if not, leave a comment telling me what I'm missing. I've probably been a huge let down to those who lived through the 60s-70s era; however I'm providing the scariest films nowadays in my opinions. With all 5 of them being modern, I seriously recommend everyone to check out one of these films if you are looking for an intense film to watch! Remember, happy Halloween everyone!Jason Eganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01669515715496955741noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6217301531661759931.post-69837293619443857552014-10-27T10:16:00.000-07:002014-10-27T10:16:16.273-07:00Elena - Chapter 7"Cindy, you need to answer me right now... What's the matter?" said Malcolm, who was clearly trembling with fear. There was still no sign of Cindy to respond to this question, and Malcolm guessed from this sight that something was seriously wrong. Baldo was hovering behind Malcolm, also unaware of the current physical state of Cindy, but made a guess.<br />
<a name='more'></a> "I think she is in shock my friend" he said. Malcolm put his head in his hands, and slowly turned to Baldo saying "yes, but what could possibly have put her in shock?". He shrugged his shoulders almost apologetically and started to think. "Baldo, I appreciate your help and concern, but you can return to your house for the night if you wish." Malcolm stated. "Are you sure?" Baldo replied. He merely nodded, before saying "Good night Baldo", and then Baldo left slowly.<br />
Before attempting to make Cindy speak again, Malcolm calmly walked downstairs to clean up and lock the door. He returned to his bedroom within minutes, to strangely see Cindy lying on the bed, with her face upright towards the ceiling, eyes opened. However, this time she turned to Malcolm as he walked in. "What a poor little girl" said Cindy seeming slightly upset. "What?" Malcolm said completely clueless. "Elena. She was so innocent. So perfect. She didn't deserve to die the way she did" said Cindy quietly. "Okay, but you can't beat yourself up about that. Obviously it was an accident - " "Yes, but that doesn't matter! She didn't deserve it! Cindy interrupted. "Right okay! Calm down. What's the matter anyway? You've been acting weird recently." said Malcolm quickly. "Nothing" she replied. "I'm tired and need sleep, so good night." From that moment, Cindy turned away from Malcolm and began to fall into a deep sleep. Malcolm, on the contrary, remained standing still and seemed rather distracted by Cindy's behaviour. "No, Cindy. Listen to me. Wake up!!" he shouted at the height of his voice. Since there was basically no response from Cindy, he began to shrug her as hard as possible. "Cindy!" he exclaimed. Surely she could not have fallen into deep sleep already he thought. He continued to shrug very hard until something completely unexpected and quite demonic occurred. Cindy rose up for a moment and shouted with a rather deep voice - "LEAVE ME ALONE!". Malcolm who was in complete shock jumped backwards as Cindy turned away again. His eyes were completely lit up with fear and he stood there shaking. What was happening to his dear Cindy? However, without any more attempt to startle her, he moved into the room next door to sleep for the night. He was very distracted by Cindy's behaviour though and continued to question himself how Cindy acquired such a manly and quite demonic tone and telling him to leave her alone.<br />
It took him a couple more hours to get to sleep in the end. However before doing this, he set an alarm for 10am, and lay deep in thought towards the night's events. He was still clueless as to who raided his kitchen, and in the end considered something completely insane. What if it was Cindy that made such a mess? He also thought, could it be possible that the spirit of this young victim Elena was controlling Cindy's body?Jason Eganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01669515715496955741noreply@blogger.com0
