The Poltergeist (2015) - Disappointing Remake

Unfortunately I must inform any of those who have not seen this film that it was a disappointment. After having mixed expectations about this film, I went to the cinema thinking it would probably be a disaster but hoping it would be decent. I am a huge fan of the original and it is one of my favorite horrors, therefore I was interested in seeing what it would be like. Whilst it wasn't utterly dreadful, I must say that I was not impressed. Across the web it receives fairly low ratings:

  • IMDB - 5.1/10
  • Rotten Tomatoes - 32%
  • Metacritic - 47%
In my opinion, I would say that the IMDB has an accurate score for this film, and perhaps Metacritic are close to my opinion however to be completely honest I believe Rotten Tomatoes are criticizing too heavily.
The film is directed by Gil Kenan and follows a similar plot to the original, lasting 93 minutes. A young family is visited by ghosts in their home. At first the ghosts appear friendly, moving objects around the house to the amusement of everyone, then they turn nasty and start to terrorize the family before they "kidnap" the youngest daughter.
As expected, the plot is very similar to the original and unfortunately had few strong features. One thing that I must admit that was fairly impressive were the camera angles. Some scenes were shot at angles which allowed the audience to question whether there was something waiting behind a character or not which I found quite thrilling. Another positive aspect was the suspense level. Although I didn't find it very scary, I thought the suspense was there. There were plenty of scenes with dead silence which made it incredibly eerie at times.
Although I've mentioned few positive aspects about this film, I must say that the negative aspects unfortunately outweigh the strengths. This film plot is almost identical to the original which is disappointing as you would expect at least a few small changes. Another thing that I was disappointed by was the clown which appeared way too many times in the trailer, yet it was only in the film for no more than 20 minutes. After watching the trailer, I was excited to seeing the creepy clown a lot however we rarely seen it after a few occurrences. I also thought that it was very unrealistic near the end. When the house was being completely trashed up I thought it was really bizarre how none of the neighbors were outside curious and terrified of the wreckage of the house. Was it just me or did you all think this? Another minor negative aspect I encountered was that I felt it was a bit slow. Even when it did speed up I felt as though the film was very short and overall I expected a bit better.
Whilst I clearly knew that it would never beat the original, I was optimistic in that it may be an average modern horror but I was wrong. I was disappointed with this remake as I really enjoyed the original and so I would not recommend you to watch this ahead of other popular modern horrors such as Insidious and Sinister.
Overall Rating - 5.2/10

Disturbia (2007) - Thrilling mystery horror

Before I watched this film I was looking forward to it because Shia LaBeouf was in the cast. After seeing Transformers in 2007, I adored Shia LaBeouf as an actor and decided to see what other films he was in.

Scream (1996) - Fantastic classic slasher

What was really interesting about this film was that it was very plain and straightforward, but at the same time it was really surprising and kept you guessing for the entire film. It is a fantastic basic slasher consisting of continuous deaths throughout the film, performed by a mysterious ghoul-masked character however there is an element of surprise and curiosity to it.

The Eye (2008) - Creepy supernatural horror

Looking at the ratings this film receives across the web would certainly put you off watching this film. It is a really creepy film in my opinion filled with a massive ton of absolutely non-predictable jump-scares. When you think about it, how cool but also terrifying would it be to have an eye that allowed you to see supernatural things?

Five reasons why I believe the Poltergeist remake will fail.

Across the web, I have noticed there has been a growing hype about the new Poltergeist remake coming in Summer 2015. A lot of people are saying it'll be as creepy as the classic in the 80's and it could be better than the original, whilst others are saying it may ruin the classic 80's film. For me, I think the remake will be unsuccessful and I believe that it will be nowhere near as good as the original. Here are some of my reasons:

Hostel Part 3 (2011) - Very gruesome film!

After watching part 2, all of my hopes and expectations in this trilogy were gone. The second part was promising until the comedy began which for me, doesn't fit with horror nowadays. However, the third part of Hostel was surprisingly decent. It follows a similar plot although, it is based in Vegas and revolves around a group of guys again rather than girls.

Hostel : Part 2 (2007) - Gruesome horror

Before I watched this, the thought immediately struck me that this film could have potential since the first was half decent. Thinking positively, ignoring any possible negative sights, I watched it right through to the end. There were some fantastic, gore filled scenes which made me shiver and cringe. However at the same time, the positives unfortunately didn't outweigh the negatives.

The Woman In Black 2 : Angel of Death (2015)

The first review of 2015 has come, and I have decided to pick a new film for everyone, to give you all a modern recommendation. The Guardian has believed this film to be "inferior" although at the same time, an "effective sequel". With ratings varying everywhere, and reviews glowing negative and positive everywhere across the web, I'd recommend this film everyday for a horror fan, however I can't say it was any better than it's predecessor.

I would like to wish you all a very happy new year, and would love to thank every single one of you for all the blog support last year, and for viewing my content in general. It was a fantastic year for me, having nothing at first and on the contrary having a lot of views now.
